Sissy and Winkie, her life spared in a decision supported by the Burke family, bathe in a pond. Out of respect to her devotion to the elephants, the Burke family allowed Joanna Burke to be buried on sanctuary grounds.

"It's not her grave here for me," said Burke's mother, Carol. "It's just the life that she had here. ... How many people can say that a loved one was very, very happy when they died. I mean that brings me a great deal of peace knowing that she was happy when she died." (The Elephant Sanctuary)
