Vetter said that only 8 per one million babies are born with Ectopia cordis. Doctors still do not know the exact cause of the condition. Congenital heart disease, which is the name of the birth defect that involves the heart, is the most common birth defect that exists. Doctors know that a number of these conditions are caused from genetic, or inherited, causes but they do not know the cause of Christopher's particular condition. (Courtesy of Teresa Wall )
