So, why should this program be any different? It's the year's unlikeliest romance, a love story that could only take place in the celebrity universe. Kanye west, the hard-edge rapper with 19 grammys. It's, like, so freezing I can't function. The story of kimye started years ago. He fell in love with her beauty when she was pop singer brandy's personal assistant. But when did she fall for him? I spoke to kim on day 47 of her 72-day marriage to kris humphries. And she told me something that now also seems surprising. How is married life? Married life is good. This year, robin roberts covered the biggest story of her career, her own battle to live. Five years ago, I beat breast cancer. Now, sometimes, treatment for cancer can lead to other serious medical issues, and that's what I'm facing right now. She had a rare disease, mds, a cancer of the blood. She was given less than two years to live. Her only hope -- a bone marrow transplant. Man: Remember, you're gonna take a full deep breath in. Over the next year, she battled the disease, documenting every step of her journey. I don't even flinch anymore. And she let viewers see it all -- her vulnerability... ...Her loneliness... ...Her faith. ♪ Rejoice emmanuel ♪ ♪ we love you, dear sister, yes, we do ♪ Walters: You made the conscious decision to allow people to go through your whole medical journey. Why did you decide to do that? I've been in people's home for the last 10 years, having breakfast with them. And so, they feel like you're a part of the family. Born in 1960, she grew up the youngest of four in a small mississippi town in the midst of the civil rights movement. Her father was in the famed black fighter squadron, the tuskegee airmen. Her mother, the first african-american to head the mississippi board of education. At one point, you wanted to be a professional basketball player. Yeah, what happened to that? Something called, ooh -- oh, yeah. Ability. Oh, that. That, you must have. So, this is my way of, more or less, being a professional athlete. Walters: So, she became a sports reporter... Good morning, america. Then in 2005, she landed the co-host job at "good morning america"... Good morning. Good morning. Good morning, everyone. ...And went from trailblazer to household name. Then last year, her career reached a new high when "good morning america" became the number-one morning show. For the second time in two weeks, "gma" beat the "today show" in the ratings war. Walters: It was just hours later that she first learned she was sick. What were you actually told? You go to the doctor and say, "i feel tired," and what do they tell you? Still hurts. Still hurts. It was hard, barbara, because... There was so much that was unknown. I was scared. For the first time, I was truly frightened. The life or death question, would one of her siblings be a bone marrow match? All three were tested. Your sister sally-ann was the one whose bone marrow was the same as yours. What are you giving her for christmas? she can have anything she wants. Go, sally, go. After the transplant procedure, robin's immune system was wiped out. Sally, you're in me. Even the smallest infection could kill her. She spent 30 days in isolation, another six months off the air recovering. And when she finally returned to the anchor chair this past february, it was a public celebration. Hi, it's robin and I have been waiting 174 days to say this. Good morning, america. Walters: But her fight is far from over. Robin, is there any chance of a relapse? There's always a chance that it could return. It's not something -- you have to find who you are today. I realize that when I start becoming depressed I'm thinking about the past. I realize if I'm becoming anxious, I'm thinking about the future. But when I just kind of, like, "i'm right here with barbara walters." That's just being in the present and just enjoying the moment. That's a good day.
