Interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans doubled earlier this month.

Republicans and Democrats in Congress have been arguing about ways to reform the loan system, so it's possible the rates could decline again.

But for now, here are five ways to empower yourself when it comes to student loans -- and some alternative ways to pay for college.
