Heller, who previously served as secretary of state in Nevada, was appointed to serve the remainder of Republican John Ensign's term following his resignation in 2011. He voted against the DREAM Act, which would have legalized the status of some undocumented youth. Berkley, a DREAM Act supporter who attempted to paint Heller as anti-immigrant during the campaign, previously represented Nevada in the House of Representatives.
