Essay: How do you tell story of 9/11?

It’s a question – and a challenge – all news providers faced in 2011.

ABC News answered, as most of us did, with special coverage and tributes – returning to that dark day, revisiting the terror and heroism, and looking forward to the rebirth at Ground Zero.

At ABC News Digital, we tried to do something a little different.

19 hijackers.  4 towers.  2,977 lives.

These are the numbers many of us know.

1.4 million tons of debris.  65 thousand personal items.  144 rings.  437 watches.  4 signed baseballs.

These are the numbers many of us don’t remember.

In 150 seconds of a web-only effort, our team offered a simple and profound narrative, attempting to give the audience a new way to understand the breadth of our national catastrophe.

$1.1 billion to build WTC.  $500,000 terrorist plot.  $4 box cutters took the towers down.

Tragedy cannot be quantified but on an anniversary that felt perhaps overwhelmed with memorials and recollections, ABC News Digital used the simple, universal language of numbers to honor the decade-old national nightmare in a unique, profound way.

We respectfully submit for your consideration “9/11: By the Numbers” for a 33rd Annual Emmy Award in the category of New Approaches: Current News Coverage.
