The events of Jan. 8, 2011 – six killed, many more injured, and a Congresswoman in critical condition – left a nation shocked. But what happened next? The story of recovery for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is one of pain, strength, hope and remarkable resilience – and, ABC News was there when she emerged to speak about her near-fatal injury for the first time. Challenged with condensing eight months of dense medical information, emotional video, stirring images, and needed biographical context into one interactive experience, ABC News Digital created a seamless, immersive storytelling experience. The result is a simple, but powerful telling of Rep. Giffords’ – Gabby’s – story. Featured in the interactive experience are her active, healthy lifestyle prior to the shooting, the right/left & lobe-specific brain impact of her injuries, and the particular effects on Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas of the brain. This is what digital storytelling can do: 3-D animations, beautiful photography, embedded video, and accompanying narrative. We respectfully submit “Gabby Giffords: Journey Towards Recovery” for a 33rd Annual Emmy Award in the category of New Approaches: Current News Coverage and sincerely thank you for your consideration. |
