OTUSNews.com doesn’t do politics as usual.
The ABC News Digital team – coordinating the OTUSNews.com launch with the ABC News-Yahoo! News Republican debate on December 10, 2011 -- developed deeply immersive and informative interactive content to complement our coverage, including:
- a real-time, exclusive Political Stock Market using breakthrough technology to combine the collective analysis of our political experts at ABC News and social sentiment from publicly available Facebook & Twitter comments, search, trending, and influencer data compiled and weighted in collaboration with Bluefin Labs.
-the Match-o-Matic, a playful yet informative interactive challenges users to answer a series of policy questions on subjects ranging from the economy & jobs to security & health care to find their top three political candidate matches in the 2012 field
-Game Changers – which is not your traditional Map to 270 – allows users to pick the Republican contender they’d like to take on President Obama and game out the path to the victory. Or, they can go back in time and play a fantasy match-up, pitting any presidential contender since 1960 against another.
- Now I Get It, animated, original digital videos explaining politics concepts or events such as the Iowa Caucus or New Hampshire Primary
Each of these features had one goal addressing the same primary challenge: how to tell the story of the election in a new and engaging way.
And we didn’t aim to appeal only to one audience; we purposefully aimed to use technology to inform and entertain, drawing in an audience that might otherwise be turned off by political coverage.
The results have been encouraging: the Match-o-Matic alone has reached 1.3 million unique users to-date and we have signed an exclusive agreement with Bluefin Labs to continue our social experiment in the Political Stock Market through the remainder of the 2012 race.
We humbly submit OTUSNews.com for your consideration in the category of New Approaches: Current News Coverage as an example of innovation & experimentation at the intersection of the digital space and television – all in pursuit of new ways to tell a challenging but critical story.
