Dec. 14, 2009 — -- A videotape showing a United Arab Emirates Sheikh torturing an Afghan businessman with whips, cattle prods, and wood planks studded with nails sparked an international outcry.

The video also implicated the United Arab Emirates police in assisting Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al Nahyan, the brother of the country's crown prince, in the torture. In one scene, a man in a UAE police uniform is seen holding the businessman down as the Sheikh pours salt on the man's wounds and then drives over him with his Mercedes SUV.

The UAE government announced it was investigating the torture tape after ABC News first broke the story, and Issa is currently on trial in a closed-door proceeding, charged with "causing harm and endangering life," according to a British newspaper.

The Afghan businessman survived the gruesome incident and later settled out of court for an undisclosed amount without filing criminal charges.
