Pirates armed with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades attacked an American luxury cruise liner with 150 passengers called the Seabourn Spirit in the Indian Ocean on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005. After trying to run over the pirates' skiffs, the cruise ship outran them. The ship docked safely in the Seychelles Islands on Nov. 7. Piracy off the coast of Somalia, which lacks a functioning central government, began to spike in 2005. (Sky News)
