The Chevy Corvette, which became an American icon in its own right, first appeared on the scene in 1953 at a New York car show. The 1953 model was the first car with a fiberglass body. It had a 6-cylinder, 150 horsepower engine. Just 300 were built in the first year of production. (Courtesy GM )
