Collectors bidding from the heart, not the head, drove up the price of a 200-year-old silver dollar to $50,000. "The 1799 silver dollar really strikes some emotional heartstrings with U.S. coin collectors even though it's not particularly rare – they love this really early stuff," said publisher Dave Margulius of CollectorsWeekly.com.

Kim Kardashian feared for the safety of her then-boyfriend Reggie Bush, so she sold his motorcycle on eBay without his knowledge – and got priceless security in return. In the past, Kardashian has turned a pretty profit on eBay. She once borrowed $5,600 from her father to buy eight pair of Manolo Blahniks, which she then resold on eBay for $2,500 apiece. It was enough to repay her father, who had insisted she sign a contract to pay back the loan with interest within two weeks.

Ernest Feist, owner of the New Jersey-based civil engineering firm Feist Engineering and a long-time eBay user, said he placed a bid from his office and was kicking off the weekend with friends at a local bar when he got a notification from the app that he'd been outbid. He immediately upped the ante and, within 30 minutes, found out he'd won the charitable auction, which benefited the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund.

One man's trash is another man's $19,299.99 beer can. A Clipper Pale Beer Can, circa 1941, was sold to a bidder who saw treasure in what others might have seen as a rusty, 12-ounce empty that wouldn't even get them a recycle fee. The seller said the can, which once contained ale from Grace Bros. Brewing Co. in Santa Rosa, Calif., was found stashed "in the rafters of my old building, where I have found many treasures."
