An 1891, $1,000 U.S. Treasury Note depicting Civil War era Union Gen. George Meade, once redeemable in gold and the only known example of the bill outside the Smithsonian Institution, set a world record for any paper money sold when it brought $2.585 million in an event by Heritage Auctions in Schaumburg, Ill. on April 27, 2013.
