May 7, 2014— -- Do those anti-animal abuse ads featuring singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan make you want to turn away from the TV set?

The ads intend to pull at your heartstrings so the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, can rescue animals in danger and pass legislation to protect furry creatures.

But, it turns out, the depressing ads even bum out the woman starring in them -- to the point that McLachlan changes the channel when they air.

During the Canadian musician's Ask Me Anything session on Reddit this week, in which she promotes her new album, "Shine On," a reader noted, "Hi Sarah. Those ASPCA commercials bum me out so I change the channel. Just thought you should know."

McLachlan wrote, "I change the channel too. It’s the kitten with the droopy eye, or the 3-legged dog, bless them, it kills me.”

The ASPCA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

McLachlan has poked fun at herself and the ASPCA ads before, such as when she was featured in an Audi Super Bowl ad earlier this year. In that ad, McLachlan sang about raising awareness of a hybrid "Doberhuahua" dog.
