DENVER -- Qwest said late Sunday it has named former Williams-Sonoma CEO Edward Mueller to succeed retiring Chairman and CEO Richard Notebaert.

Mueller, 60, has more than 34 years of experience in telecommunications and was president and chief executive officer of Ameritech from 2000 to 2002. He sits on the boards of VeriSign, Clorox and GSC Acquisition.

Notebaert's retirement is effective Wednesday.

Notebaert, 59, joined Qwest and pulled the company from the brink of bankruptcy amid a multibillion-dollar accounting scandal after former CEO Joseph Nacchio was forced out in June 2002.

Mueller will take over Qwest, the main telephone service provider in 14 mostly Western states, at a time when phone companies are competing with telephone, Internet and television providers.

Notebaert and Mueller planned to address analysts and reporters in conference calls Monday.
