Safeway Inc. is recalling ground beef sold in some of its stores because of concerns it may be linked to an outbreak of salmonella.
The grocery chain said Thursday that it is recalling ground beef from Beef Packers Inc. that was sold between June 6 and July 14 in its stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota and Wyoming.
Safeway said the beef was sold at its full-service counter and in its self-service area. It includes fresh ground beef, ground beef patties and fresh meatloaf products.
Safeway said customers should discard the product or return it for a full return.
Beef Packers, a Fresno, Calif.-based company, recalled nearly 826,000 pounds of ground beef that may be linked to a salmonella outbreak.
The USDA says because the beef was repackaged under different retail names, consumers should check with the store they bought beef from to determine if they've purchased any recalled beef.
Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever and the infection can be life-threatening. The strain of salmonella involved in this case is resistant to many commonly prescribed drugs.
