March 19 -- Now in theaters: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Taking Lives.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless MindScreenwriter Charlie Kaufman, whose screenplays for Adaptation and Being John Malkovich were nominated for Oscars, has done it again.

In an incredible, cast-against-type performance, Jim Carrey plays a painfully shy, frighteningly dysfunctional man. When we find out that he's never heard the song, "Oh, My Darling Clementine," we get a hint of what's happened: He's had his memories of his girlfriend Clementine erased.

Kate Winslet plays Clementine, a wild extrovert who uses hair dye like a mood ring. Her performance may even be better than Carrey's.

With great comic actors like Bill Murray, Johnny Depp and Diane Keaton getting the Oscar attention they deserve, save room for Jim Carrey's name at the top of next year's Best Actor list. Grade: A-

Taking Lives

Angelina Jolie is very convincing as an FBI special agent called in by Montreal police to catch a serial killer.

Ethan Hawke is the eyewitness who's been set up to trap him, and he's got a great line. "I've been fishing," he tells the cops, "the bait always dies!"

Two gasps, a shocker of a plot twist, and an Oscar-caliber supporting-actor performance from the city of Montreal make Taking Lives that rare suspense thriller with real thrills and actual suspense. Grade: B.
