No Holds Barred for Alexis Stewart

'Whatever, Martha': Blunt, Risque and Martha's Daughter

The Family Business

In a lot of ways, they couldn't be more different: Hutt is married with two children and lives on Long Island. Stewart is divorced and made headlines last year when she revealed she was spending up to $28,000 a month on efforts to get pregnant.

"We're very different," said Hutt. "She's high-brow, and she'll tell you that I have plebeian taste. I like to watch as much junk on TV as I possibly can. And I like potato chips and stuff. And she won't eat that. We're both very neat. But she likes no clutter, and my house is total clutter."

So how did these two very different women meet? Where else but at "Martha Stewart Living" where both were working for their parents. Stewart and Hutt freely admit that they got their gigs because of who their parents are. "Plumbers' sons get in because they're plumbers," Stewart said. "That's how life works. You help your children get a job."

Sometimes the children help their parents in their greatest challenges. When Martha Stewart faced jail time for obstruction of justice and lying to investigators about a well-timed stock sale, Alexis stood by her mother, attending her trial daily. Alexis said she even fainted when the verdict was read.

"I wouldn't have been anywhere else," Alexis said. "I wanted to be there for my mother."

For now, Alexis Stewart is happy to both support her mother and mock her on TV, and even allow her cohort Jennifer Hutt to poke fun at her chronic crankiness in the process.

"She's miserable, and angry," said Hutt. "But good inside, and loving and loyal, and knows that you're good, and she cares about you. There is no better friend that you could possibly have."
