— -- Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi, who got engaged in the 21st season finale of "The Bachelor," have gone their separate ways.

The two confirmed their breakup in a joint statement, which has been obtained by ABC News.

E! News was the first to report the split.

"It's with a great amount of heartbreak for the both us as we have decided to end our engagement. We gave this relationship our all and we are saddened that we did not get the fairytale ending we hoped for," they said. "We will continue to be there for each other no matter what. This hasn't been an easy decision, however, as we part ways, we do so with lots of love and admiration for each other."

The episode in which Viall, 36, proposed to Grimaldi aired on ABC in March. Afterward, the two appeared on "Good Morning America," and Viall confirmed that their plan was to "take this one step at a time and be realistic."

"I think there's just some things we want to do as a couple and some normal things, and you know, we're going to move things along," he said. "We'll worry about setting a date down the road."
