— -- Marvel made it official last night, announcing that Benedict Cumberbatch, 38, would take on the role of "Doctor Strange" in the film due out on Nov. 4, 2016.

Doctor Stephen Strange discovers the world of magic and other dimensions following a terrible car accident, according to the official release.

Producer Kevin Feige mentioned Cumberbatch's "depth and sincerity" when announcing the star in the role. Boy, was he right about the casting.

The transition from "Sherlock" to "Strange" seems about as organic as can be and there's no question of Cumberbatch's acting chops. Plus, did you see him in "Star Trek Into Darkness" as Khan? The guy can kick some serious butt.

For average comic fans who don't know who this superhero is, it's time to get educated.

Strange first appeared in Marvel books back in the 1960s and his name partly came from the fact he first popped up in a series called "Strange Tales."

According to Marvel Wiki, Strange was a doctor, but that car accident mentioned above "severely damaged the nerves in his hands, ending his surgical career."

"Too vain to accept positions as a consultant or assistant, Strange sought a cure and pursued every available treatment, legitimate or not, soon depleting his fortune; in months he was reduced to a derelict, performing shady medical procedures that barely paid his bar tabs. After hearing rumors of the mystical Ancient One, a desperate Strange pawned his last possessions for a ticket to the East and found the Ancient One's Tibetan palace," his bio continues.

Eventually Strange learns to use magic for good and becomes a selfless hero, and magical defender of Earth.

"The Ancient One spent years instructing Strange in the art of sorcery, teaching him how to tap the innate mystic powers of both himself and the world around him," the bio reads.

Strange has affiliated with such iconic groups as the X-Men, Fantastic Four and guess who -- The Avengers.

His Powergrid on Marvel reads he is unmatched in Energy Projection and Fighting Skills.

This should be a good one.
