— -- Miley Cyrus has been open about the fact that in the past, she's been romantically involved with both men and women.

As it turns out, her parents' marriage had an impact on the way she views gender as it relates to relationships.

"I don’t associate men and protection necessarily," she told Time magazine. "I think that’s what’s given me the openness of sexuality. Not that my dad wasn’t an awesome protector, but I trust my mom to save me. She’s the prince. I never had that fairy tale."

Cyrus, 22, said earlier this month that at 14, she first told her mother, Tish, that she was attracted to women. Still, she has yet to find a relationship with a man or a woman that clicked. For example, when she was involved with a man, there was an “overly macho energy” that turned her off.

"That made me feel like I had to be a femme-bot, which I’m not," she said. "And then when I was with a girl, I felt like, ‘Oh s***, she’s going to need someone to protect her, so I’m going to need to have this macho energy.’ And that didn’t feel right either."

To that end, she's not sure what her future holds. One thing is for sure, though: She's going to hold her life partner to certain standards. Cyrus explained that last Valentine's Day, she was horrified by some of the couples she saw in a restaurant, because many of the men weren't paying attention to their dates.

"All the women in the restaurant were with these older, fat men that had just let themselves go. They were just being drunk bastards. And then the women were sitting there, trying so hard just to look good. And they’re ignoring them the whole time," she recalled. "I thought, 'I’m not living like this.' ... If I end up in a straight relationship, that’s fine — but I’m not going to be with f—ing slob guys."
