The musical hit "Dreamgirls" led Academy Award contenders with eight nominations, but didn't receive a nod in the best picture category, after being considered a strong contender. Beyonce Knowles was similarly disappointed. The star had dreams of her own: to receive a nomination for best actress in a leading role. She lost out to film heavyweights Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet.
