Traditional American rock singer-songwriter John Mellencamp, known variously as John Cougar Mellencamp and John Cougar, was also inducted at the ceremony, by fellow Hall-of-Famer Billy Joel. Mellencamp's career began modestly in the '70s, but he won notoriety in the '80s with the chart-topping hits "Hurts So Good" and "Jack and Diane." Mellencamp continued to rock out throughout the '80s and '90s with his heartland hits, which he often leveraged to promote social awareness (most notably with the Farm Aid and Vote For Change concerts).
