The Secret Diary of a Call Girl

The latest television show to hop the pond is Showtime's "The Secret Diary of a Call Girl," premiering Sunday, June 16. Based on the blogs of London call girl Belle de Jour, the half-hour series follows Belle (day name: Hannah Baxter), a 27-year-old working in London as a high-class escort. British tabloid favorite Billie Piper, who stars in the Brit hit, won over Showtime executives, convincing them to run the British program. Showtime had initially considered buying the format rights, recasting it and making it American, according to Robert Greenblatt, Showtime's president of entertainment.

While Showtime has adopted the Brit version of the show, check out other American versions of hit British television shows. (Showtime)
