Born and raised in New York City, Carlin dropped out of high school and joined the United States Air Force while simultaneously working as a DJ at a local radio station in Louisiana. After Carlin was discharged by the Air Force (after he was labeled an "unproductive airman") in 1957, the budding radio personality, pictured at left in 1960, met fellow comedian Jack Burns at a Texas radio station. The pair moved to Hollywood as a comedy duo in the early 1960s.

Burns told The Associated Press, "He was a genius and I will miss him dearly." (Kai Shuman/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)
