Carlin, pictured at left in the 1970s, pushed the boundaries of comedy and is often touted as a counterculture hero. The stand-up comedian uttered seven words in 1972 which would lead not only to his arrest (he was later exonerated), but to a 1978 Supreme Court ruling. After the words were broadcast on a New York radio station, the court upheld the government's ability to sanction stations for broadcasting offensive language. (Marty Temme/WireImage)
