Shakira Explains Cancellations Due to Son's Illness

— -- After announcing that she would not be attending the Latin Grammys and the American Music Awards this year for "personal matters," Shakira is opening up about her son Sasha's illness and how he's doing now.

"Due to personal matters, I won't be able to travel to Las Vegas & LA to attend the @LatinGRAMMYs or the @AMAs this year," the singer tweeted last week.

On Tuesday, the 39-year-old mother of two, took to Instagram with a picture of her smiling 21-month-old son, letting her fans know he's doing better. She did not specify what exactly had been wrong.

"Thanks for all the messages you sent for Sasha while he was sick. Everything is under control now, and he's back to his cheerful self!" she wrote in both English and Spanish.

Shakira and her beau, Gerard Pique, have two sons. The singer was so happy with her son's progress that she posted another photo yesterday of Sasha playing with his big brother, Milan, 3.

The 17th Annual Latin Grammys are on Thursday and the AMAs are on Sunday. Shakira is up for a Grammy for her duet with Carlos Vives, “La Bicicleta.”
