September 14 -- Actor Denis Leary who established The Leary Firefighters Foundation in response to the 1999 Worcester, Mass., fire in which he lost a cousin announced today that he's establishing a separate fund to support the New York City Fire Departments and the families of those who have perished

Leary, who stars as a smart-mouthed cop on ABC's The Job, said in a statement, "In the past few days, the entire world has witnessed the heroic acts of hundreds of New York firefighters and rescue workers who lost their lives as they worked to save others. Our hearts are heavy for the families of the victims and the families of firefighters."

The actor and comedian was devastated to learn that a friend, Garnet "Ace" Bailey, a former Boston Bruins hockey player, who was to have appeared at Leary's upcoming foundation fundraisers, died in the second plane to hit the twin towers, USA Today reports. Leary also counts several firefighter friends among those missing in New York.

According to the newspaper, Leary is donating the $100,000 he won last weekend at a celebrity edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire to the fund. To donate, visit the Web site at www.learyfirefighters.org.

Jennifer Lopez, Backstreet Boys, Others Pledge Their SupportOther celebrities making financial contributions to charity and relief efforts are designer Kenneth Cole, who said he'll announce a plan next week for a nationwide campaign. "We hope to raise money and apply it in a way that can be most useful. The government can't rebuild our infrastructure and our sense of confidence. Corporate America is going to need to rise to the occasion and apply its resources."

Joining Madonna in donating their concert proceeds are the Backstreet Boys and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Each group pledged a minimum of $10,000 each in ticket sales to help victims and families affected by the national tragedy. The effort is managed by the newly established Clearchannel.com Relief Fund, which will benefit the American Red Cross.
