August 17 -- Mira Sorvino, whose upcoming movie Wise Girls has gotten a publicity boost thanks to the meltdown of her co-star Mariah Carey, denies that she and the distressed diva had a physical fight on the set.

"We had one verbal argument, one day," the Oscar-winner said Wednesday at a movie premiere, according to the New York Daily News. "There was no physicality whatsoever as if you could really imagine me rolling on the ground and pulling her hair out, as The National Enquirer said." Tabloid reports had Carey, who is recuperating after a two-week hospital stay, starting the fight by throwing a salt shaker at the Mighty Aphrodite star.

"My mother called me and said, 'What's this? I read that you were on the ground with Mariah Carey!' I said, 'Mom, how can you, of all people, believe that?!'" Sorvino said at the New York premiere of the film Lisa Picard Is Famous, which she produced.

"I'm very sorry for the recent troubles that [Carey]'s experiencing," said Sorvino. "I think she'll come out of it fine. She's a very smart person."

Wise Girls is due in theaters next year; Glitter, Carey's other film, was pushed back from Aug. 31 to Sept. 21 after her collapse.
