August 7 -- Pop chanteuse Mariah Carey is resting up, and her new movie, the first star vehicle of her nascent film career, won't see the light of theatrical release until late September.

Reps for 20th Century Fox announced on Monday that Glitter, which had been scheduled for an Aug. 31 debut, will now arrive in theaters Sept. 21.

Distributors routinely shuffle movie release dates, especially during the hyper-competitive summer season, and Fox did not immediately offer any explanation for its decision. But with Glitter's stressed-out star hospitalized indefinitely since July 25 and unavailable to promote her picture just don't expect to see the movie until resting and recuperation have produced a happy, healthy Carey.

Carey's publicist, Cindi Berger, says the postponement of Glitter was undertaken entirely on Fox's initiative. Berger also told The Associated Press on Monday that her client's condition remains unchanged.

Glitter is one of two Mariah movies in the can. The 31-year-old siren, who made her feature-film debut with a small role in 1999's The Bachelor, recently completed filming on the mob comedy Wisegirls, which co-stars Mira Sorvino and is tentatively scheduled to be released in February.
