May 16 -- Good news for fans of Dr. John Carter. Noah Wyle, who plays ER's doe-eyed doc, has signed a new two-year deal that will keep him on NBC's top-rated medical drama through the 2003-04 season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Wyle is one of the few remaining original stars of the show, having been with the series since its premiere in 1994. During that time, he's earned five supporting actor Emmy nominations.

With series lead Anthony Edwards retiring next season, Wyle is expected to take more of the show's limelight and perhaps to get an Emmy nod in the leading category.

Wyle, who is also venturing into films with roles in the Sundance entry Donnie Darko and the Jennifer Lopez thriller Enough, is said to have gotten a sizable salary boost thanks to the new deal.
