Life and Death Propels X-Files Finale

May 8 -- Death and a possible alien birth are awaiting viewers who turn in to the two-part X-Files season finale, according to executive producer Chris Carter.

The Fox sci-fi drama has seen its share of ups and downs in its eighth season, including the disappearance of David Duchovny's Fox Mulder and the introduction of new agent John Doggett (Robert Patrick). That's nothing compared to the cliffhanger episodes, which are set to air May 13 and May 20.

For starters, Gillian Anderson's way-pregnant Agent Scully could very well give birth to an alien baby, Carter told TV Guide Monday. But couldn't Mulder, who has long flirted with his redheaded partner, also be the papa? "There is that possibility as well," Carter demurely replied.

Expect the appearance of "three wise men" (uh, the Lone Gunmen?) and "a significant death," the creator warns. Grumbling fans may also find a reason for the odd coupling of Mulder and Doggett, which Carter says has "good logic behind it."

X-fans may not see Duchovny's return next season ("Whatever decision he makes, we have done eight terrific seasons together," Carter noted to the mag), but a ninth go-round is currently being negotiated between the show and its producer, 20th Century Fox.
