Dude! Time for the MTV Movie Awards

April 25 -- The MTV Movie Awards nominee roster reads a lot like this year's Oscars, with nods to Gladiator, Erin Brockovich, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as best film and to Russell Crowe and Julia Roberts as lead actors.

But the nominee list diverges from those Oscared films to shower attention on the So-Cal slacker ode Dude, Where's My Car and its goofy star, Ashton Kutcher, and dancing queen Julia Stiles, of the surprise hit Save the Last Dance which just happened to be produced by MTV.

Kutcher, who also stars on the Fox series That '70s Show, is up for the best male breakthrough performance, opposite Jack Black in High Fidelity, Patrick Fugit in Almost Famous, and Hugh Jackman in X-Men. Stiles, who won last year's breakthrough female performance award, competes against Oscar winner Roberts for best actress honors.

Since MTV doesn't abide by the calendar year for its awards, 2001 releases like Hannibal and Save the Last Dance can compete with 2000 releases.

Sprinkled in amid the everyday movie categories are MTV-only prizes for best kiss (will it be Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore in Hannibal?), best villain (hmmm Hannibal the Cannibal or Gladiator's Oscar-nominated Joaquin Phoenix?), and best fight scene (Gladiator and Crouching Tiger duke it out again).

And, we couldn't help but notice, Oscar's sentimental taste has no room on the MTV awards list tough luck, Billy Elliot and Chocolat.

Playing host at the June 7 ceremony will be Bring It On hottie Kirsten Dunst and Saturday Night Live cutie pie Jimmy Fallon.
