March 7 -- A worker was killed in a crane accident Tuesday on the set of the upcoming Spider-Man movie. The currently unidentified man was a welder who was working on building a New York City-style skyscraper façade.

Fire officials told Reuters that one crane fell over, slamming into a smaller one, which was carrying the welder and another crewmember in a basket. The welder was fatally struck in the head and died at the scene, authorities said.

"There was a slight breeze this morning and that could have been a factor," Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Rowe told The Associated Press.

The accident occurred around 9 a.m. PST in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey.

The other crewmember was unharmed. State safety investigators were traveling to the lot to determine the cause of the accident.

Spider-Man features actor Tobey Maguire (The Cider House Rules) as the web-slinging hero and his alter ego, Peter Parker. The film, due out in May 2002, also stars Kirsten Dunst and Willem Dafoe.
