Sound Bites: Nelly Furtado, Napster, Shyne

Nelly Furtado Wins Four Juno Awards

Singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado and quirky rockers the Barenaked Ladies dominated Sunday night's Juno Awards. Furtado took home four of the trophies — Canada's top musical prize — while the Ladies won three. The 30th annual show, held at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario, also honored Neil Young, the Tragically Hip, Terri Clark, and Nickelback. Furtado sang a medley that blended her award-winning single, "I'm Like a Bird," with "Turn Out the Light," while The Moffatts, SoulDecision, Lara Fabian, and The Guess Who also performed at the event.

Napster Begins Blocking Files

In the face of a looming court injunction, popular song-swap service Napster began screening select files of copyrighted material last night around 10 p.m. Napster attorney David Boies said in a court hearing on Friday that the company aims to block approximately 1 million files by the time the injunction is filed, which could happen this week. For a song to be blocked, its copyright holder must submit the title, the name of the artist, and certification of copyright ownership. Napster also suggests that the owner submit alternate names to be blocked. For example, a search on Napster today will not bring up any matches for Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady," though numerous files called "Real Slim Shady" are still available.

Shyne Defense Rests Its Case

After calling one witness Friday and two more this morning, the defense for rapper Jamal "Shyne" Barrow rested its case in his trial on three charges of attempted murder. The charges stem from a December 1999 shooting at a New York nightclub in which three people were injured. Rap entrepreneur Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs and bodyguard Anthony "Wolf" Jones are being tried on weapons and bribery charges in the same trial. Photographer Terence Jones testified that he saw someone else — not Barrow — fire a gun at the shooting. The prosecution will bring rebuttal witnesses to the stand Wednesday.
