January 31 -- A 15-year-old girl who suffered cardiac arrest during a crowd crush at a Jan. 26 Limp Bizkit performance at Australia's Big Day Out festival died today.

The girl, identified only as Jessica, was in critical condition for days at Sydney's Concord Hospital, where she died this morning, according to the Australian Associated Press.

"Our hearts and thoughts go out to her family and friends in this time of deep sorrow," festival organizers said in a statement. "The Big Day Out has always been a celebration of youth and the joy of music. It is incredibly devastating for all involved in the event that a young woman has lost her life in what should have been a joyous day of festivity with her friends."

About 30 people were injured during the show, and organizer's blamed excessive heat and crowd excitement.

Limp Bizkit stopped its performance several times to urge the crowd to calm down. After part of the crowd collapsed before the stage, and Jessica and other injured fans were removed, the band stopped playing for 20 minutes.

They resumed at the urging of police, who feared the breakout of a riot among the crowd of 20,000.

However, over the weekend, the band announced it was pulling out of the final days of the traveling festival.

"Shaken by the injuries that occurred and what the band perceived as a cavalier attitude toward fan safety by festival organizers, Limp Bizkit ultimately do not have confidence that the last three days of the six-day event will run smoothly with no one harmed and have opted to pull out rather than take a chance that a fan may be injured," the band said in a statement. "Upsetting the band further were repeated verbal and written conversations with festival organizers regarding requirements for crowd safety that were not respected."

Organizers, who had initially praised Limp Bizkit's cooperation on the day of the injuries, defended their safety procedures.

"Unfortunately the band performance was of sufficient intensity to provoke unprecedented and ferocious crowd activity in front of the stage," they said in a statement. "Given the tension between the band and festival across a range of issues, the producers have expressed some relief at the departure of Limp Bizkit."
