Chart Watch: Beatles, Sade, Ricky Martin
November 22 -- All You Need Is: They've still got it. The Beatles, the top-selling band in the world, and arguably the most influential rock and roll force of all time, finally get around to releasing Beatles 1, their first greatest-hits collection, and what happens? It immediately rockets to the top of the charts, selling 594,666 copies and silencing the skeptics.
New Faces: Beatles 1 isn't the only new album on the charts — heading into the Thanksgiving weekend, there are already eight new albums in the Top 18, with brand-new entries in all four spaces at the very top. Behind The Beatles is the fifth installment in the That's What I Call Music series, which sells more than 444,000. It's followed by Sade's Lovers Rock, which is picked up by almost 370,000 soul-starved fans. Ricky Martin's Sound Loaded comes in at No. 4, with sales of more than 317,000 copies, while the Offspring's Conspiracy of One moves more than 125,000 units at No. 9. Marilyn Manson's latest offering, Holy Wood, bows appropriately enough at No. 13, selling 117,000, and Keith Sweat's Didn't See Me Coming comes in at No. 16, with sales of 113,000. Mobb Deep's Prodigy's first album, H.N.I.C., sells 105,000 copies at No. 18.
The Rest: Last week's No. 1, R. Kelly's TP-2.com, falls to No. 5, still selling more than 288,000 copies. It's followed by Outkast's Stankonia at No. 6, with sales of 227,000, and Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water at No. 7, selling 197,000. Jay-Z's Dynasty — Roc La Familia 2000 sells 157,000 copies at No. 8, and Nelly wraps up the Top 10, selling another 123,000 copies of Country Grammar.
Coming on Strong: Overshadowed by the new entries is the Baha Men's ubiquitous Who Let the Dogs Out, which climbs a notch to No. 11, selling more than 122,000 copies. Charlotte Church's Dream a Dream continues its rapid ascent, moving from No. 47 to No. 22, with sales of more than 73,000 copies — more than 43,000 more than a week ago. And Shaggy's Hotshot stays at No. 23, selling almost 13,000 copies more than last week, with a total of 73,000.
