Liam and Patsy Finalize Divorce
September 25 -- The troubled three-year marriage of Oasis singer Liam Gallagher and actress Patsy Kensit concluded Friday with a hasty divorce. In London Divorce Court, a district judge granted Kensit an undefended decree nisi — a ruling which takes effect immediately — after concluding that the rocker's conduct had been so unacceptable that she shouldn't be expected to remain hitched to him.
The couple, who tied the knot in secret in April 1997, began fighting publicly within the first year of marriage. Although neither party was available for comment Friday (Gallagher was attending his grandmother's funeral in Ireland), both have been vocal about their troubles in the past.
"It's impossible for me to go on any longer," said Kensit recently. "I did my best and I got absolutely no help in return. It's over. I'm actually relieved." Don't look back in anger, indeed.
This was Kensit's third marriage to a musician; previously, she was hitched to Big Audio Dynamite's Dan Donovan and Jim Kerr, lead singer of Simple Minds. The couple has an 11-month old son, Lennon; Kensit also has a 7-year-old son, James, by Kerr.
"Maybe I was too young, but I don't think I'll be marrying again," Gallagher was quoted as saying. "I'm just trying to get on with my life and be a good dad."
After putting their $2.3 million mansion in North London up for sale in June, Gallagher and Kensit announced that they were going their separate ways in July. Since the split, Gallagher has been very visibly dating singer Nicole Appleton of All Saints, ex-paramour of former-Oasis-devotee-turned-rival, pop star Robbie Williams.
Liam's brother, Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, announced earlier this month that his own three-year marriage, to Meg Matthews, was over.
Despite a year punctuated by marital troubles, declining record sales, Noel's announcement that he would no longer tour with the group outside the United Kingdom, and two incidents where the band was bottled offstage by festival audiences, Oasis continues to stagger on. A live double-CD, Familiar to Millions, recorded at the band's July 21 show before more than 70,000 fans at London's Wembley Stadium, comes out Nov. 14.
