August 30 -- Jim Carrey may follow up his portrayal of Dr. Seuss' fuzzy, nasty Grinch by taking a U-turn back into the world of romantic comedy.

The chameleon-like comic is in talks to star in Bijou, notes Variety. The film is a twisted tale set in 1951 and focusing on a writer who is being investigated by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. When the young man who just happens to have amnesia from a car crash arrives in a rural town, he enters into a case of mistaken identity.

Bijou will be directed by Frank Darabont, who recently helmed the Oscar-nominated film The Green Mile. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Carrey and the director are eager to collaborate.

Carrey, who was last seen in the Farrelly brothers gross-out Me, Myself, & Irene, could use the more dramatic Bijou to return him to the acclaimed darker side he displayed in The Truman Show and Man on the Moon.

In June, Carrey signed on to star in the Joel Schumacher thriller Phone Booth but dropped out after deciding he couldn't get a grasp on the character.
