July 12 -- No happy ending is in sight for Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. Quaid filed for divorce Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, as the injured party in the failed marriage.

The split has caught many by surprise, as the two have long been considered one of Hollywoods steadier couples.

Quaids decision comes two weeks after news that the two had separated. Since then rumors have been flying in the tabloids linking Ryan to a new leading man Russell Crowe.

Crowe and Ryan are filming the hostage drama Proof of Life for The Devils Advocate director Taylor Hackford. Proof has Crowe falling for Ryans married character while the two try to negotiate the release of her husband, whos been captured by mercenaries.

Crushed ValentineRyan and Quaid have one son, and first met in 1987 while making the comedy-adventure Innerspace. They teamed up again a year later on D.O.A

Ryan, the star of hits like Youve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle, has become Hollywoods favorite sweetheart since marrying Quaid on Valentines Day in 1991.

Quaid counts the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap and Frequency among his recent hits.
