— -- The reviews have not been kind, but "Suicide Squad" still managed to set a box office record over the weekend.

The DC supervillain film achieved first place with an estimated $135.1 million in ticket sales -- the biggest total ever for an August debut, eclipsing the $94.3 million for a Marvel movie, "Guardians of the Galaxy," two years ago.

"Suicide Squad" boasts an all-star cast, including Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Jared Leto as The Joker.

Last week's top movie, "Jason Bourne," starring Matt Damon, finished in second place, earning 22.7 million dollars.

The weekend's other wide release, the Kevin Spacey cat movie "Nine Lives," had an opening that was far from purr-fect. It landed in sixth place, with $6.5 million dollars.
