Transcript for Handicapping the Oscars
We're just days away now from the Academy Awards before you fill out your Oscar -- -- need to get the lowdown on the favorites and what dark horse contenders could pull off the upset. Ben Lyons from global grind -- dot com joins us now pop -- -- iPad thanks to see. Thanks so much I mean we're days away that's right and yet and who -- A best picture at -- a lot of people are saying that the artist -- happens when wrapped a. Excel you know it's one a lot of the big war awards leading up to the Oscars in recent years the academy has. Seems to chosen -- on the smaller movies you know Hurt Locker won up -- avatar even the King's Speech -- some dog millionaire these films that kind of came out of the festival scene right. I -- artist made a huge blasts. Our. I think -- And -- how he's going up against isn't such a big movie either nobody has big stars yeah George Clooney and I think that film will get its award in the adapted screenplay category -- Alexander Payne but I think the artists. Time it's unique movie a movie like this doesn't come around too often -- you like I did on the zone yet and people are saying well how can modern audiences relate to this movie and I think it's a story about redemption. And overcoming. You're -- -- self doubts and fears and are certain themes that even though it's a period -- can it be related to our lives today -- -- I think Harvey Weinstein noticed that there is such a great job of championing this movie getting people excited about a silent film in 2012 it's an amazing thing he's -- that -- being -- in fact I would -- target him that I -- about -- actor in the course we do have. George Clooney up against Brad -- And John that -- hi Dina -- -- and being armed and did they got. Has charged academy members that throughout the award -- -- I think again it's his to win -- a terrific performance of memorable performance. You know yes he's going up against some big household names and some stars but no -- won before not lead actor category but hasn't won an Oscar before. And I just think the movie really capture the hearts of the academy academies. Little older voting body you know in the median age 62 years old in the academy surprising and I think a film like the artists really -- to damage and John majored in of course is is the heart -- of that -- he's very charming and I think George Clooney was put anything he's the only one that he was worried about yeah. Ireland. That's actors is this one mile davis' to -- this is it tough when you are just don't we started here saying it's tough to bet against Merrill Streep and I think the reason why Viola Davis is gonna win. What it was really enjoy that films and so will the box office people love the book. People didn't really care for the elderly the movie the movie it is about the performance not so much the film as a whole. I think that's ultimately gonna hurt -- street yes she's lost so many times over the years but she's one before Al Davis has never won. The Oscars almost seem like it's it's a lifetime achievement award in some -- and you're seeing now with her this year possibly Christopher Plummer so I think it's viola davis' time. He's got a great body of work leading up to this and it's that's -- performance shall only be the second. African American actress to ever win the Oscar and -- can be academies in -- given the honor if you it's amazing -- Brian Christopher Plummer so let's look skip ahead to best supporting. This category where there are a lot of older actors and wondering unpack yet I'm happy for Joseph -- see him get a nomination out. Again Christopher Plummer a life time achievement award in many ways and his performance in a film that. Was really loved by the Hollywood community -- in cross over to to mainstream America so I hope that people when they watch the Oscars in the C. Christopher Plummer -- best supporting actress they don't see beginners which is a very sweet movie. A father and -- story. And I just it's terrific performance report about the father coming out to a fun yes it is a story very close to the director's heart and then he went through this with his own father -- passed away since we made this movie with Ewan McGregor and now. It's it's a beautiful film and a coming of age story for a man leader in his life you're going with Chris I was a best supporting actress. The best supporting actress is Octavia Spencer you know again and I'll lifetime of work where people didn't really recognize -- put a name into the face over the years I -- look -- -- -- that I DB. She's been so many things over the years and I think for Oscar performance as you have to have -- memorable scene. When she serves up that -- that isn't exactly pie that is just a remodeled and I think -- -- -- to -- in to help the -- is your right to help -- gonna get -- -- you know you know oftentimes you know people complain about the Oscars and sale we have seen these movies -- these -- really -- a lot of money but the help is that -- that struck a chord with audiences who read the book and others who -- you know just finding out about the story and film. Beat them like a 17880. Million dollars in the states and I think it's gonna get two Oscars prompted U vial. McKinney is too easy thing to do you have any out possible surprise possible upsets me while the artist I think is a -- Hugo might sneak in the films nominated eleven times a movie about making movies in the in the history of cinema also possibly Kenneth Branagh -- -- -- it's upsets Christopher Plummer. The academy loves honoring actors were playing actors in his performances Laurence Olivier in. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
