War Reunites Long-Lost Brothers

Two Sailors Discover They're Brothers as Their Unit Prepares to Deploy to Iraq

For two sailors stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, a friendly card game revealed more than simply who the better player was -- it uncovered a long-lost brotherhood.

As their unit prepared for deployment to Iraq, 23-year-old Albert Hendrick, Jr., a sick call and surgical shock trauma corpsman, and 26-year-old Sean Hurley, an operating room technician corpsman, made a startling discovery -- they had the same father.

Upon first hearing Hendrick's last name, which he recognized as the same name as his long-lost father, Hurley said his suspicions were aroused. Hurley, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., knew little about his father growing up in the Virgin Islands, where he moved with his mother when he was 4 years old.

But it was when another soldier called out to Hendrick Jr. by his first name -- also the same as Hurley's father -- that he realized Hendrick, who grew up in Brooklyn, could be his brother.

Putting Together the Pieces

Hurley waited until the card game was over to see if this strange coincidence was more than just that.

"Did your father used to drive the bus for the city?" Hurley asked Hendrick.

"I said, 'Yeah, he drove the bus,'" Hendrick said on "Good Morning America." "He retired from the New York City transit system in Brooklyn."

That's when Hurley revealed to Hendrick that they might be brothers.

Hendrick picked up the phone to call his father and share two pieces of news -- that he was being deployed once again to Iraq, but only this time, he might have a brother there with him.

Albert Hendrick Sr. happily confirmed that they were indeed bothers.

A Three-Way Phone Call

"He was real joyful," Hendrick said. "He was sounding like he was getting teary-eyed. He was like, 'I can't believe it. I haven't seen him since he was about 4.'"

Soon after, the men were reunited on a three-way phone call, and now Hendrick Sr. is anxiously awaiting the safe return of both his sons from Iraq.

"I spoke to Sean in Iraq," Hendrick Sr. told the New York Post. "He calls me dad. I told him I loved him and I missed him and to take care while he was over there."
