MLB Swings Pink Bats for Breast Cancer

May 8, 2008 — -- This weekend Major League Baseball players will step up to the plate using pink bats to celebrate Mother's Day and help knock out breast cancer.

Just weeks after finishing her own last chemotherapy treatment for the disease, "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts returned to her sports roots and headed to the field with the New York Yankees to support the cause.

"I just think it's a great cause. … You know we're all very fortunate to be playing this game and we realize how important it is, but yet how trivial it is in the big scope of things. Anytime you can give back and bring awareness to people is a good thing," said famed third baseman Alex Rodriguez, the highest-paid player in the game.

"It's for a great cause, and I look forward to it," Yankees captain Derek Jeter said. For Jeter, whose sister battled with cancer, it's a cause that hits close to home.

"Growing up you hear the word cancer [and] you automatically assume it's someone really old and there's no hope for them. For my sister, it was right before she turned 21. She battled and she's cancer free right now, and I'm happy to say that," Jeter said.

"You get concerned after a tough loss or going 0 for 4, but you only think about your health when tragedy happens. As human beings, we have to remind ourselves, 'Hey, we are so thankful.' Nothing is a promise in this world, so we're blessed for every day," Rodriguez said.
