President Obama welcomed Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas to the White House on February 2, 2009, the day debate began on the stimulus bill in the Senate. Douglas was a rare Republican supporter of the president's economic stimulus bill, telling Obama, "If I were writing it, it might look at little different. But the essence of a recovery package is essential to get the nation's economy moving." Pictured here, Obama and Douglas rearrange the furniture in the Oval Office, moving the sofa to make way for the press coming in for a briefing. (Pete Souza/The White House )
