Lewis grew up in East London and is the daughter of a Welsh mother and a Guyanese father, whom she credits with inspiring her interest in music. Her parents enrolled her at age 5 in London's prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School. Her family nearly went broke spending money on all her classical vocal training.
As a former performing-arts school student, Lewis spent years polishing her craft, writing and recording songs and studying piano, guitars and voice.
She left school at 17 to pursue music and took odd jobs, including a waitress job at Pizza Hut, to pay for studio time. (Heidi Gutman/ABC)
