Colin Beavan, a 46-year-old writer in New York, and his family are taking part in an "extreme green" experiment. They're trying to live for a year in a way that makes no net environmental impact. That means giving up most modern conveniences. They don't buy products with any packaging (that includes toilet paper) or food that isn't grown or made within 250 miles, and they don't take public transportation -- even elevators!
