David Woodruff: My Brother Is 'Good to Go'

Bob Woodruff Will Return to the U.S. Today

The brother of injured "World News Tonight" co-anchor Bob Woodruff said the family had received a "package of positive news" this morning.

"He [Bob] improved markedly over the night," said David Woodruff, Bob's older brother. "His signs are great, as good as can be expected. He is good to go."

Bob Woodruff and cameraman Doug Vogt will be returning to the United States today to receive further treatment for injuries they suffered during a roadside bomb attack in Iraq.

"The doctors told us this is not going to be a sprint, it's going to be a marathon and we're all committed to be running that marathon with him," David Woodruff said.

He said when his brother was first hit by shrapnel from an improvised explosive device, his first words to his producer were: "Am I alive?" Woodruff said when his brother realized he had survived, he started to feel the pain and used some "colorful language" before losing consciousness.

Woodruff underwent surgery at the U.S. military hospital in Balad, Iraq, before being flown to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in western Germany late Sunday night.

Doctors were originally concerned about possible swelling in Bob Woodruff's brain, but Woodruff said his brother's brain pressure was normal. He added the family was less concerned about superficial facial injuries.

"It looks like kind of a burn you might get," he said. "Those things, frankly for us, are just minor compared to making sure he's going to return from an injury to the head."

Woodruff said the family, including Bob's wife, Lee, were grateful to the doctors and to all those who had posted messages of support online.

"We want to say thank you to all these people," he said.
