Jan. 19, 2007 — -- Just because you need a little help with your vision, that doesn't mean you need to compromise your looks. To pick the best frames for your face, follow this step-by-step guide from Dawn Yanek, Editor-at-Large for "Life & Style Magazine."

Present your current prescription to your salesperson. Not all styles of glasses work with all prescriptions. Ask if there are any restrictions for the frames you select. Talk to your sales person about your personal style; this way they have a better idea of what frames fit into you life.

Before you choose frames, you have to know what shape your face is: round, oval, square, or heart.

If you have a round-shaped face, you have the greatest width at cheekbones. These types do well with wider, horizontal eyeglasses that are slightly angular. Choose rectangular frames that are straight across the top and bottom to give the illusion of length and cheekbones. Geometric frames also work as well as semi-rimless frames.

If you have an oval-shaped face, your forehead is slightly wider than the chin and you can carry off almost any frame. Choose a pair with a wider-than-normal bridge. Avoid small frames that make your face look even smaller.

If you have a square-shaped face, your face will look a bit boxy with a strong jaw line. Soften these features with round, oval, or cat eye shaped glasses that draw attention away from the jaw line to the top of the frames.

If you have a heart-shaped face, your forehead is significantly wider than your chin. Choose frames that draw attention away from the forehead and down toward the chin, like ovals or rectangular frames with curved bottom rims.

If your skin is "warm," you have yellow undertones to your skin and are complimented best by colors like camel, khaki, navy blue, orangey-reds, off-white and matte black.

Skin with "cool," or blue, undertones, is best complimented by colors like bright white, shinny black, plum, magenta and pink, you will also look good in darker tortoiseshell.

Donate old glasses.

Don't throw away your old glasses. There are plenty of great charities who will take them and give them to people who can't afford new ones.
