March 2, 2007 — -- While most people are aware of the importance of knowing first aid to help ailing people, many don't realize it's important to learn first aid for their pets.

On "Good Morning America," veterinarian Marty Becker said that accidents can't always be prevented, but that by being prepared, pet owners can help keep small problems from turning into big issues.

He said the one thing all pet owners should know is how to give their pet the Heimlich maneuver. They should also have an easy-to-find pet first aid kit at home, so that injuries can be treated before a trip to the vet.

Below is Becker's list of essential items for a pet first aid kit.

Today's segment featured two dogs, Charlotte and Toby, who are both up for adoption from the Humane Society of New York .
